We are at the forefront of computer science research.

Advanced Applied Research imagines the future of software and its influence on the Samsung ecosystem and then creates innovative software technologies for Samsung in the field of Intelligence and Computer Vision.

DATA INTELLIGENCE
Our research in AI, big data analytics and algorithms for Deep Learning and Machine Learning focuses on the latest generation High Performance Computing infrastructure and a distributed S/W platform to enable scalable learning by utilizing diverse datasets from the global Samsung device ecosystem.

COMPUTER VISION
We believe Computer Vision technology will be the next big things in HCI for many emerging intelligent devices fueled by advancement of deep learning. Computer Vision technology will transform how user interacts with systems and services while improving quality of life and promoting Samsung to remain competitive. Scene understanding is one of the most essential functionalities of human vision and also a key to unlock new possibility to have profound impact on many future intelligent consumer devices. Our goal is to research and develop a vision algorithm based on neural network that can understand the complex visual world rapidly, accurately and comprehensively.

OPEN SOURCE
We believe it is important to engage in strategic open source ecosystem development through contributions to key projects. We deliver open source support and solutions for Samsung products and business innovation and then channel them upstream, and promote Samsung’s commitment to the Open Source Communities via participating in open source development and open source foundations.

WHO WE ARE

Our team is comprised of top researchers, scientists, entrepreneurs, and engineers from diverse backgrounds who are experts across a broad range of computer science topics.

We work closely with other teams across Samsung to deliver the technologies and solutions for future intelligent devices and services, and we conduct leading edge research on topics in computer science that will have significant impact in the medium to long term on Samsung's current and future businesses. We also collaborate with academia, industry partners and start-ups as an essential part of our open-innovation efforts.

Technical Leadership

Ibrahim Haddad, DE

Ibrahim Haddad is a Distinguished Engineer and Head of the Open Source Lab. He is responsible for overseeing Samsung's Open Source strategy and execution, internal and external collaborative projects, participation in key open source development projects, and representing Samsung in various open source foundations and open standards organizations.

Ibrahim has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Concordia University in Montréal, Canada. He completed his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Computer Science at the Lebanese American University.

Lab Head

Nick Cassimatis

Nick Casssimatis leads Advanced Applied Research. He and his team help create and oversee innovative software technologies for Samsung in the field of Intelligence and Computer Vision.  He was a National Research Council Postdoctoral Associate at the Naval Research Laboratory, where he did research in robotics and cognitive architecture, collaborating with researchers from MIT and NASA on the Robonaut project.  

Nick received his doctorate and undergraduate degrees from MIT, and his masters degree from Stanford.

Henry

Technical Leadership

Henry Holtzman, VP

Henry Holtzman is the Vice President at Samsung Research America. He joined SRA from the MIT Media Lab, where he led the Information Ecology research group as the lab’s Chief Knowledge Officer, and directed the Consumer Electronics 2.0 and Digital Life research programs.

Henry has 28 years of experience as a computer science and electrical engineering researcher, specializing in human computer interaction (HCI), ubiquitous computing, video compression and networking protocols. He contributed to the MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 digital video standards and co-invented the Internet of Things.  

Henry received his undergraduate degree from MIT in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and holds a Master of Science degree from MIT in Media Arts and Sciences. He has consulted for leading technology and media firms.
